Now that we’ve entered into June, we’re beginning to see updates on great events and things to do this summer! Settled in Lenexa, Cottonwood Canyon is surrounded by a wide variety of things to do, so you’ll never have to go far to have a good time.
You may be thinking that the quick twenty minute drive into downtown Kansas City will put you at the center of arts, culture and festivities, but we’re talking about something even closer. If you’re new to Cottonwood Canyon, you may not realize that Lenexa is actually a rapidly growing area with a vibrant community! From retail shops, various restaurants, golf and active city leadership; you’ll find endless things to do right in your backyard.
Last week, we talked about the ways you can enjoy the outdoors on the walk/bike trails surrounding Cottonwood Canyon, and we mentioned our desire to help residents (and those interested in learning more about Cottonwood Canyon) discover the entire lifestyle that this stunning golf course community offers. Today, we thought we’d highlight a few events taking place this month in Lenexa that you won’t want to miss!
Latino Art Bravisimo Art Show

Weekdays from June 8 - July 16 from 8am to 5pm
- You won’t want to miss the beautiful color and inspiration at the 10th annual Latino Art Bravisimo art show! This juried show highlights Kansas City metro area Latin American artists, and is free and open to the public. An artists’ reception, when the winning artists are announced, will take place on June 15 from 6:30 to 8:30pm, and will be hosted by Consul Jacob Prado of the Kansas City Mexican Consulate. The reception is also open to the public in order for everyone to enjoy this special evening and music by Marimba Sol de Chiapas. The Great Lenexa Bar-B-Que Battle

Friday & Saturday, June 22-23
- What began in 1982 with 12 contestants and 12 judges has grown to become the official Kansas State Championship as declared by Governor John Carlin in 1984! This annual event, in its’ 31st year, will begin on Friday with 200 bbq teams arriving to battle it out for the title. Festivities, which include children’s activities, live music, and tasting the best bbq in Kansas, will take place on Friday from 4:30-11pm and Saturday from 9am-3pm. The judging and presentation of awards will be held on Saturday, so don’t miss out on hearing who takes the title of the Great Lenexa Barbeque Battle, Kansas State Champion!
